I'm Jen McGinley, and I'm a Designer for Performance from, and currently, based in Glasgow.

I graduated in 2015 with a BA(Hons) in Theatre Design from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  Later that year, I was named one of the winners of the Linbury Prize for Stage Design (more about that here).

I began my career as an assistant to designers Es Devlin and Tom Scutt, on productions in London venues such as the Donmar Warehouse, National Theatre, and Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. I then started designing my own shows and began working around the UK.  So far, I've worked with companies such as the Citizens Theatre, Northern Stage, Derby Theatre, New Diorama, and the Royal Lyceum Theatre.  In 2022, I designed the first Shakespearean show in the Cockpit Theatre of the new Shakespeare North Playhouse with Not Too Tame.

I make work that challenges the audiences' perception of the world they are in. I believe that theatre is one of the most profound and useful tools in social change, can also provide real catharsis, and therefore should be easily accessible to everyone.

Working in a way that is environmentally sustainable is also of huge importance to me.  My work with the National Theatre of Scotland using the Theatre Green Book on The Enemy was recently used as a case study at the Theatres Trust Conference, and I have worked with this model on many shows since.
